2018 China GT Wuhan R10 Race Report
Double victory for D2 Racing’s CJ Huang sealed his GTC drivers’ championship bid.
Winning Team’s David McIntyre and Charlie Fagg also claimed a second consecutive win of the week, which put them in front of China Equity AMR’s Jack Mitchell by 2 points.
Min Heng and Lin Nan shared spoils in a lonely GT3 race at round 10.
GT3 Class
The race started behind the safety car due to slippery track conditions resulting from the truck race earlier in the morning.
Kuo Kuo Hsin started behind GTC teammate from P2. However, the #307 GTC entry overshoot the corner at the last sector chicane and made contact with Kuo’s right front. Kuo limped back to the pit with damage and this spelled the end to his Wuhan street race.
Team JRM’s #991 Lin Nan and Min Heng inherited the lead, and brought the car home safely to score the duo’s lonely maiden China GT victory.
GTC Class
No first corner drama on Thursday as CJ Huang led the race from the start, followed by teammate Kuo’s AMG GT3. However, it appeared that R+ Racing’s Wang Tao misjudged his braking point going into the T10 chicane and slammed into Kuo. This earned the Chinese driver a Drive-Through Penalty and demoted him to fourth place on the grid.
Further down the field, Liu Kai in the #68 Xtreme Motorsports Radical marauded through the field and started to hunt down leader CJ Huang before the pit stop window. He stayed out for a few more laps while everyone else pitted, and came out side by side with CJ Huang on the main straight after the D2 driver lost 10s during pit stop.
Huang just managed to cover Liu into T1, and the two engaged in a half hour-long battle for the lead. There were some touch and go moments but in the end Huang held off Liu’s attack to take the flag.
Dominic Ang took the wheel from Song Bo and set the fastest lap in the second stint. He passed Zhang Dasheng’s #307 on lap 35 and completed the last spot on the podium, bringing a disappointing start to the week to a satisfactory conclusion.
GT4 Class
Dong Liang bounced back strongly from an off-colour R9 race and vaulted from the back of the grid to P1 with a 20-second lead before the pit stop, His Winning Team teammate David McIntyre held off his Aston Martin rivals and handed the car to fellow Briton Charlie Fagg in P2.
Fagg then led the charge to cut down the 30-second gap against Dong, and in the end Dong let his teammate by to maximise McIntyre’s championship points. By handing the #570 entry the victory, David McIntyre now leads the GT4 drivers' title by 2 points.
A number of cars struggled with grip on a slippery Wuhan street circuit. Stanley Yang lost his rear on the high speed left-hander at T9 and suffered suspension damage. He returned to the pit and were four laps down as a result. Jack Mitchell put on a valiant charge after a prolonged pit stop but ultimately the gap was too big for the #618 duo to move up the grid.
The #619 of Rodney Tu and Martin Xie also struggled for pace. They were consigned to the pit when a problem developed late in the race and they crossed the finish line fourth.
Sadly for Dong Liang, his run of bad luck continued as he was disqualified after the race for a technical breach. This decision promoted Stanley Yang and Jack Mitchell to second, and Rodney Tu and Martin Xie third.
