China GT recently announced the appointment of Paul Taylor and Simon Maas as the series’ new Race Director and Deputy Race Director, starting from Round 5 this weekend in Beijing. Between them, the Australian duo can boast over 50 years experience in international motorsport, spanning sports cars, single-seaters, and various other two-wheel and four-wheel events. We sat down with Paul and Simon to discuss their vision for China GT, which is now in its third year and is increasing in popularity among overseas teams and spectators.

What attracted you to China GT?

Simon: I have been following China GT since the beginning and had an opportunity to be involved in 2016. It is an exciting market with lots of possibilities. It is nice to be part of something with such potential.

Paul: It is an opportunity to share our experience we have amassed in different areas and help China GT fulfil its full potential.

In which areas do you think China GT needs to improve?

Simon: China GT is already a well-regarded championship. Our experience from international motorsport will help us identify operational issues and bring greater consistency to race management. We want to create a more focused approach in order to establish a fair, safe and well-run competition. These areas are what international teams are most concerned about, and we always keep that at the back of our mind. That’s how we should move forward to exploit the full potential of this exciting Asia market.

Paul: Like Simon said, we want to make incremental improvements and not bring about wholesale changes. Moving forward, we will try to spot the small issues throughout the upcoming weekend and put our experience to use to help the championship develop.

What approach will you take to work with the Chinese promoter, and how will you reconcile the sporting side with commercial considerations?

Simon: All championships worldwide have commercial needs and this is not a situation unique to China. Our job is to ensure that the sporting needs are satisfied and the regulations are followed. That said, we are mindful that a championship is about teams, drivers and fans. We understand that dynamic and will apply our experience to balance both sides.

Paul: Of course the commercial considerations are important. However, we are here to ensure the sport is conducted without undue influence from the commercial side. We need to draw a line somewhere to main the integrity of the sport.

What are your visions for China GT, and for motorsport in the region more generally?

Simon and Paul: There’s no denying that China is one of the most exciting markets and is developing in a number of aspects, including motorsport. The key to this growth is sustainability, and in order to achieve that, you need substance and quality. China GT needs a long-term strategy that involves putting a good structure in place and hiring the right people. The world of motorsport is becoming smaller, and the Chinese market is a lot more accessible. It is fantastic to see top drivers from around the world coming here to explore its potential. That itself presents a good opportunity for Chinese motorsport and China GT.

Finally, what do you think of the Goldenport track?

Simon and Paul: it is a classic track with a lot of history. It is technically challenging and well suited for GT racing. We hope it can produce a spectacle for the fans and interesting races for drivers.
